The Old Guard, based on the comic book series of the same name, follows Andy and her team of immortal warriors as they fight evil through the centuries. However, as viewers might’ve learned while watching the new flick over the weekend, there’s a lot of mystery behind Andy’s origins.
In the film, we learn about Booker’s (Matthias Schoenaerts) tussle with Napoleon, and the love that Joe (Marwan Kenzari) and Nicky (Luca Marinelli) have shared, dating all the way back to the Crusades, but what about Andy? Nile (KiKi Layne), a 30-something U.S. Marine who becomes the newest recruit to The Old Guard, asks Andy how old she is, something that Theron’s character repeatedly avoids answering.
But if we look at her given name in the movie, and at the source material, we can piece together some of Andy’s origins before we get more answers in a possible sequel.
Let’s dive into the origins of Charlize Theron’s character in The Old Guard, Andromache of Scythia.
WHO IS ANDROMACHE OF SCYTHIA?
The name “Andromache” brings up two different women in mythology. The first refers to Andromache, the wife of Hector of Thebes, a Trojan prince. In Greek mythology, Hector was killed by Achilles during the Trojan War and her son was killed by Achilles’ son, Neoptolemus. Neoptolemus would take Andromache as a concubine and she would bear children from him.
Now, this Andromache from Greek mythology isn’t the badass warrior that we see in The Old Guard. The Andy we see is actually more akin to another Andromache from ancient mythology.
According to Encyclopedia Brittanica, the people of Scythia were of Iranian stock and occupied a large region that stretched from Eurasia through Siberia and to the borders of China from the 11th century BC to the second century AD.
It’s possible that The Old Guard’s screenwriter, Greg Rucka (who also co-created the comic, with illustrator Leandro Fernandez), could have just taken the name of Andromache for his protagonist. Or, if there’s a sequel, perhaps we’ll get a proper origin story for Andy that clears up her background and also squares away the timeline.
The Old Guard is available to stream anytime on Netflix.
